Friends With You Rainbow City in New York

To help celebrate the opening of the new 10 block long second section of the High Line park in New York, Miami's Friends With You, in association with AOL, has brought its Rainbow City installation of 40 monolithic, stripey and colourful air-filled sculptures to town where it will reside until July 5...

Rainbow City was originally commissioned by the Luminato Festival of the Arts in Toronto this time last year (read our blog post about it here) and showcased again in association with AOL and Paper Magazine during Miami Art Basel.

Essentially, Rainbow City is designed as a fun, colourful playground for children and adults alike, where the installations can be interacted with and played with. Some of the inflatables can be spun and bopped, whilst others function as environments that can be entered and explored. The site also includes a pop-up shop in which limited edition products designed for AOL will be available. As well as the sculptures, various cheery air-filled FWY characters including the Rainbow King (seen below with Friends With You founders Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval) will be promoting Friends With You's positive message of "magic, luck and friendship" around New York.

Standard Deviations

Standard Deviations was the name of a Museum of Modern Art exhibition that was notable for showcasing the 23 digital typefaces that MoMA acquired in January 2011^[1] for its Architecture and Design Collection. The exhibition was open from March 2, 2011 through January 30, 2012.^[2] The full title of the exhibition was Standard Deviations: Types and Families in Contemporary Design, though the title was originally announced as Standard Deviations: Prototypes, Archetypes, and Families in Contemporary Design. The exhibition was organized by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator in the Department of Architecture and Kate Carmody, curatorial assistant.

While the exhibition showed works of design other than typefaces, the selection and acquisition of typefaces was significant in the history of typographic design. Phil Silvers 1960's Tv special with Judy Garland

Back in the 60's TV set design was all in black and white or at least it was when it hit the screens.. here's a tv special with Phil Silvers and Judy Garland (and Robert Goulet) in '63 showing how creative the design teams got. Here high contrast photography is used to create photos strong enough to translate through the process. Screens with photographs of new york fill banners and set elements, further down these photos form a park bench and trees in central park and 'fly' in and out of scene changes like a wipe.

NENDO 2010 Kanazawa World Craft Triennial

Minimal and clever, this Nendo designed exhibition in 2010 has 62 greenhouses.

Here's what they say (via)...

The greenhouses are made completely of glass, and each comes with its own shelving and pre-installed wiring for lighting. They are inexpensive, perfect for small budgets, and are easily assembled with only a screwdriver. It took only one day to assemble all 62 of the boxes.

They can be broken down and stored after the exhibition. This not only eliminates nearly all waste from the exhibition fixtures, but also allows for possible reuse during the the Kanazawa World Craft Triennale 2010.

The floor - in our shows its always been an element that tends to be left to just a straight coat of paint because of the hassle factor and expense or repainting several coats after a radical change and its never as important as the work or other elements usually. Edward Gordon Craig

Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) was perhaps the most influential theatrical designer in the first decades of the 20th century, and was known for using nonrealistic, symbolist design rather than sentimentality in his creations. A master at the art of woodcut engravings, a publisher, editor, book illustrator, and essayist, Craig's passions covered many art forms, but all were driven by his devotion to the theater and his conviction that he alone envisioned the grand design that would renew the life of the theater. A new exhibition, "Edward Gordon Craig and the Art of the Theatre," explores Craig's life and work and is on display at the Harvard Theatre Collection, Pusey Library, through May 30.

The son of the famous English actress Ellen Terry, Craig grew up in the theatre as an actor and creator of sets and costumes. He used abstract scenic elements and lighting to create striking, dramatic effects from simple objects, in contrast to the realistic backdrops common to the theater of his day. He employed movable elements and screens that could be placed on the stage in a variety of configurations. The exhibition includes an elaborate set of fretted wooden model screens that Craig cut to instruct students attending his short-lived School for the Art of the Theatre, as well as a model stage with modular blocks to demonstrate the versatility of his stage design concepts. Some years ago we posted a link to CDSI (church stage design ideas) due to their innovative stage designs on a budget which is valuable information what ever your religion and contain information on what materials they used. So I just checked back with them and yes its been building all the while.

Liked this post for example as a starting point for a practical approach to virtual sets..
so the context here is very different from ours but the concept is sound.

Back in our corridor shows at Manresa Road 8 or 9 years ago when plasmas were very expensive still we were doing the same thing but in a big door way: open the door and prop it open (door opens away) leaving a hole in the corridor. Block out the hole using sheet timber and paint over leaving a widescreen aperture similar to a giant plasma. Staple gun back projection BP material over the back tightly and back project from the room behind. Projectors are always available but 70" plasmas aren't and due to the back projection the audience is looking into the light so its always stronger.

Geoff suggested possibility of having a careers night or a careers day where separate from the private view, people can been shown around your work.

Last Years Show and ours..

The shows we like…and not so much.

Interested in the balloon of 09 and how to transform the space.

Emma talked about how to break the space into a new one (not so boxy) mentioned the reebok shoe shop. Could be a bit vibrant but not the graphics from Reebok but the idea of angled plains.

Split level structures ( david can send us images from the day when they experimented last year ) But why would we need a split level structure, no sight lines, not a nice view. Need to give it a reason to be up their, so could it have a purpose as a dark viewing room. Health and safety of high structure too and its an expensive option as its scaffolding then covering in wood.

So last year there was a concept but due to some issues with the way the work and the scaffolding weren't working well together it had to be adjusted radically late on. The front entrance did really pop though. However inside there were no high concepts. It felt like a lot of time had been invested in the scaffolding that meant that some good ideas could have been lost and in the end it was fairly simplistic with white boxes and good colour although it was very well received. It also used the rsj metal pillars well in hiding them.

MA shows used hanging ribbons to separate the space.

Round house curtain with Ron Arad mentioned as it used a similar method but projected..

a big circular structure around the central column. Inside could be projected videos or images. Could also be floating above our heads so people could walk in and out of it easily.

Big fans of trying to change the space with a big feature

Do we need a fashion wall anymore? - wasn't needed last year

Would be good to produce a publication for our show.

Could we have carpet…? the floor costs £200 to paint. Shinny floor, thought of that a few years ago but it doesn't last and gets dirty.

Multiple show planning

Do we want to have multiple shows and how can we do it.

We could make the show out of banners that could easily be taken down and taken to another location or other transient materials - print, projection etc but not big structures.

Ipads. It would be great to get ipads then projected on large screens so people could gather around it - this would provide an animated experience for viewers on a larger scale - look at in sketchup and test. We hooked an ipad up and looked some apps via the big plasma - it autorotates and is 1024 by 768 (4:3).

How could we get the work off the screen as there is so much on the personal websites now and into the real world when its digital in an exhibition.

EMS stands for Electronic Meeting Systems. We thought we would have a look at what was going on in this area and if there was anything that could help us plan our group show meeting better. So far we use blogs and inevitably dropbox and a shared server but these are for outputs of group efforts for others to keep up to date or for working on aspects of a design together. We had a round table chat at our first 2012 show meeting this week and here are some thoughts.

First the big software costs per member and although maybe great and extensively featured such as think tank which comes with recommendations from the police, nasa and nato! Then there's open source software like yet another meeting assistant (yama) but the moment you read that special installation circumstances exist then this becomes a system which is less transparent across systems than we would like.

We need the ability to share notes, images, urls and views on these instantly in a group using laptops, ipads and after on the blog. So here's the list culprits the group likes which are part EMS and part note-taking options and we are just quickly testing to see which is best..

Evernote - sharing lists, images etc its a free download but is capped at 60mb data unless paid but is a favourite amongst schools and mac users and in its paid form works well for groups.

Workflowy.com - this is a great tool for keep track of notation information and can be shared - simple interface but doesn't show images however does recognise URLs.

Tricider - awful name but can take notes, allow voting, be embedded into blogs.

Then there's ipad only apps like project planner, poplet, ideas flight etc but they are all stuck as apps however mindnode from the apple app store is a good little free mindmapping application and of course the expensive but featured omni softwares. We tossed out G+ and Facebook which although the latter can edit group docs well is a bit over the hill for this group and G+ requires all to join and then google docs etc.

5 ipads 2 synced from 1 mac - we looked at the kiosk software available but found the structure we needed in the ipad's own os plus its parental controls were fine.

imac computers fed with internet from the ceiling and dropped down through plinths. All plinths had access panels inside, crawl spaces and some could be removed for technical or security access.

ikea shelving plus boating wire and metal clasps from an electrical retailers to secure more expensive books

Scalable show layout and colouring to support large numbers when needed and not look empty when the exhibition is open during the week. Earlier attempts to light all work individually became too complex to carry through.

Objects and space people can relate with and lean on including natural barriers at various heights to give people a sense of discovery and zoning.

Using work above head height to draw in the high ceiling, also reclaiming the ugly rsj columns in the middle of the space by using them to support the infrastructure and extra lighting.

supporting images on slideshow in transitional areas

breaking the scale of the supergraphic diagonal lines on the front of the building down into the work area.

simple colour scheme from pantone print originals - colour matched. print hand applied with industrial carpet tape (last years expense of pro wallpaper pasters or oversize mounting costs negated).

some student blogs printed in-house on the hp5500 28" roll and then looped and hung break up the space and use the available height

with a large space keeping all grids open - not mean

painted floor then cleaned shortly before pv then polished the day before to bring it back up

captions printed onto vinyl stickers then given a matte seal and cut up locally - font on all of the show elements consistant.

accent statements reversed out of show palette used throughout show to add life in more sparse areas

antidote to al the ipads - fisher price moving image tv of the class shoot

looking at health and safety issues

adjusting sketch-up maps to reality by redrawing them all out of standard sheet sizes for easier construction.

using black paper masking tape walking the show with the space blocked out to see if it works

yellow post-it notes denote work placement after lots of movement. This followed a day long meeting looking at all work submitted with a curatorial peer review team of students who organised what would be included and how.

In the show planning up until this point the infrastructure had been made from scaffold with a powder or paint coating. This was arranged to an advanced stage when we starting seeing the nature of the work as it was being handed in - we always check the work to come weeks in advance but this time we just couldn't reconcile the low tech finish with the standard of work on its way. So we switched to wood and redesigned the core of the show in timber using the same colouring and spacial value as before.

This meant more carpentry and new timelines to be worked out. In a show like this it is possible to do this within a few weeks of showtime but it needs a tight team and a quick signing off on the new design - unusual though.

GTS had a general comment that these colours from sara's project may look good at some point..

Haven't look at these colours yet but will go back and try them but have quickly made a psd model for mocking up colours and here are some options.. (if you want to try some colours mail me the rgb values and ill post them in the model). By the way we did try multicoloured scaff poles (2 colours in rotation) recently and it looked very ugly and distracting for the work...

Remember we aren't spending lots on folios this year as we have spent some of this money on iPads but the folios are still good for quick access and next year we may have no more need of them?

Got a good deal on these (under budget) - no prices here but we would have to act fast if they are needed..

A3 spiral bound - more insert can be found 10 pages, very clear, natural very thick card cover, could be covered or when we apply stickers may liven up the simple covers but at least they aren't black!

The targus mobile security lock came out in 2006 before the ipad and was meant for securing phones and ipods - does it work on ipads?? - news just in it doesn't work someones had a try

the easiest option is to use 3m security pads or stick a lock to the back but it may harm the pad for the next user..

Blocking the space out provides with a few issues.. firstly the size of the scaffold structures is so great that the banners may be costly so we have to either find a cheap banner supplier or make the structures smaller so they can more easily accommodate smaller print (the sizes we could print at college perhaps) or we subdivide the structures so that 8' by 4' or 10' by 8' boards could more easily fit them. The banner we printed last year had a join which we are not sure about. I think these shots reveal the concept but the ink coverage is too high as it stands however the scaffolding costs are holding up so far and so is the spraying. Obviously on the sketchup images below the scaffolding cant be seen and the images are just grabbed from the net to give an idea of coverage. (click to enlarge and read the text).

The work is accounted for but has not been added into this model yet.

Also just below is our preferred method for construction at the joints and the lighting will be incorporated into the top of the structure ie all elements sprayed (colourways tbc) but probably more of an eggshell finish than the high shine here.

Responsive light systems were produced for a promotional trailer for BBC 1Xtra.

Four sets were designed for the film, one, a corridor of fluorescent tubes which flickered on as the camera passed and three that included a desk covered in lights behind which one of the DJ’s from the various 1Xtra shows would perform.

Cold Cathode Fluorescent lamps and LED surfaces were combined with animation and bespoke video control systems to create lighting systems, which helped communicate 1Xtra’s energy, music and talent.

At the design museums show for the Brit Insurance Design Awards they have ipads for their show..

They have certainly taken a more relaxed route, relying on invigilation for security totally and having power always on and a note saying not to enter personal details onto the ipads. No enclosures, kiosk software or dedicated show apps or instructions on what to do. Context is all.. so if its an ipad next to the angry birds feature you just find that and everything else is just working but void of content. Id like to say it was refreshingly simple but it seemed a little underdone.

a. You should put the iPad in a locked enclosure that disallows users from being able to press the home button.

a2. Just hiding/covering the home button is not enough. Eg in video mode the user could 'stray'by tapping on the video options menu. Out of thousands of apps why is there not a video kiosk function? Incredible! A perfect example is giving a lecture and whilst talking, handing around ipads to the audience to let them explore some short video clips. You dont want them tapping out of the programme!!! Can anyone advise as I need a video kiosk app asap.

..In the beginning of 2007, we were invited by a group of French curators to visit them in Paris. We met them in a very large construction pit, an enormous empty hall, measuring almost 36.000 square meters. This hall was to become the location of 104 (Le Cent Quatre), a new French cultural institute that would open its doors in October 2008. Situated in the 19th arrondissement, 104 is a very ambitious project, housing several exhibition spaces, theatre halls, concert venues, stores, and apartments for artists-in-residence.

To make a long story short, the curators asked us us to develop their graphic identity and sign system. Or to be more precise: they asked us to design a graphic manual, a 'charte graphique', for other designers to work with. It was a very complicated construction: because of all kinds of reasons (legal, political, bureaucratic and cultural reasons), we were only allowed to work on the graphic manual, while other design studios would then be responsible for applying this manual to all the different parts of the graphic identity (sign system, website, etc.)..

THE “legitimate” theatre, as it is constituted at present, is doomed to extinction. The motion pictures, which for fifty cents give the public an excellent two-hour entertainment, are too strong competition for the legitimate theatre where seats cost from $2.50 upwards. Yet, up to now, there has been no way to sell seats in the legitimate houses cheaper, for obvious reasons. Even the largest do not seat more than three thousand persons; so that the cost of the production, the salaries of the actors, the rent of the theatre, must all be borne by a comparatively small audience.
Suppose that one of the elaborate New York productions, such as the “Follies,” could be viewed at the same time by three million people. Obviously, the cost per seat to the audience, instead of running up to $0.60 (for good orchestra seats) and more, as it does today, would come down to 50c per seat, and yield a handsome profit. And this is exactly what the theatre of the future will do.
I have shown here my conception of the future theatre, which by this time must become obvious; with the event of television, the legitimate theatre can be not only saved, but made to reach undreamt-of heights which cannot even be foreseen today.
During the month of October, the Broadway Theatre in New York City exhibited, for the first time on any stage, a giant television screen 10-ft. square. Before the production, I was requested by the management to suggest various ideas as to what should be televisioned. One of my suggestions which was adopted, was to televise the performance in another theatre and show the results on the television screen in the Broadway house. This suggestion was accepted; and part of the regular show of the Theatre Guild was shown on the screen of the Broadway Theatre. It was the first time in history that two theatres had thus been linked together, the production of one stage being shown on another.
This is the principle of the theatre of the future. I now go a step further and show what will happen ten years hence. In New York City, or Chicago, we will have a central key theatre, located in a building erected specially for that purpose, which will have a large number of stages. There will, however, be no audience in this theatre; no one will view the performance directly excepting the stage director and stage attendants.
The curtain rises and the production starts. A battery of television transmitters picks up the light impulses, while a battery of microphones picks up the sounds. The results of both pickups are transmitted over a wire net to distant cities; just as, today, the headquarters of the New York broadcast studios are connected by wire with distant parts of the country.
There will be, however, this important difference. At the present time every one listens-in to radio programs at his home; whereas in the future, you will have minate behind each orchestra seat in such a way that the action ejects a stream of invisible gas particles, containing the odor which now envelopes each member of the audience.
Of course, the scent organist of the future will not rest after simply depressing a single key, which would give the audience an excessive scent of, let us say, heliotrope, jasmine, narcissus, rose, etc. If he is a skillful scent organist he will be able to depress several keys at one time, and combine a number of delightful new scent combinations; just as the skillful musical organist of today, by depressing a number of keys, can produce novel effects upon our auditory nerves.
In our illustration is shown in detail how the small feed-pipes terminate close together in a small round boxlike affair, where various odors may be mixed, and the result of the mixture conveyed into the audience.
Lest you think that the idea is far fetched, I wish to point out that some years ago, at the Music Box Theatre in New York, during a certain performance depicting a California orange grove, the audience were surprised and delighted to find the entire auditorium permeated with orange scent, which was released in the basement and blown through the ventilators so that, at the appropriate time, the entire auditorium was bathed in a delightful orange scent.

A few weeks ago the gdc show group started to talk about how the scaffolding structure might work..

after these initial talks smaller specialist groups tackled various issues and talked them through.. as a result of this process came the concept of using the scaffolding as a support system for paper rolls of printed work and blocked colour which would run throughout the show.

The Changes are ..

12 ipads in show plus 3 on and for students to use to show work,
folios less formerly produced with less emphasis on the way they are constructed and presented - digitally presenting content and accessing work more important,
the publication has been reduced to a tear off poster, the bar and hospitality will be at the garden at the rear of the show,
as mentioned.. scaffolding sprayed in a limited colour range being used to create a device to display print with the metaphor of the printing press surrounding the public with content above and below fed around the scaffolding system.
website is being made of all the students work which can be seen online during the show and will be the content for the ipads.
lighting connected to the show infrastructure self lights the space - blackout to help this

Apparently last week was the official opening of Printers Park, a playground in New York City inspired by printing equipment. The park was constructed on property owned long ago by Richard March Hoe, who invented the rotary printing press in 1843. NYC Parks and Rec sez:

The southern portion was reconstructed in 2009 with a playground modeled after the design of the rotary printing press: graduated steps mimic the cylinders of the press, and the white pathway running through the park alludes to the continuous roll of paper that was fed through the press.

Have several posts before about widescreen formats, cinerama, and all things immersive where cinema is concerned so here's an updated post and news as well of an Application on the Mac App store (desktop apps) called Array Sync which is part of an Array suite of tools which enable you to split up movies into cropped chunks which can then be distributed to different graphics cards (onto monitors or for projection) or can be sent to different computers all in sync and for less than £20..

Matrox make a graphics expansion system in an external box which uses the maximum resolution of your computer to drive up to 3 monitors adding up to that resolution. So you can have 3 external monitors of 1370 by 768 driven by the screen res of 4080 by 768 which is good for installation work running 3 screens or projections in sync.
